Switzerland: Government Expected to Increase Work Permit Scrutiny as Layoff Reports Continue
The Swiss government is expected to step up its scrutiny of work permit applications in response to continuing layoffs of local workers throughout the country. Employers should be prepared for tougher examination of their applications and longer processing times as a result.
Swiss labor authorities are expected to look especially closely at cases in which work permit beneficiaries are to be placed at client sites, out of concern that laid-off local workers might be replaced by foreign workers. In such cases, labor authorities could require sponsoring employers to demonstrate that foreign workers will not perform any of the day-to-day work activities that laid off workers once did.

Employers should identify future personnel needs in Switzerland, including projects that will involve client site placements. They should plan for the possibility of longer work permit processing times and prepare to work with their clients to meet stricter work permit documentation requirements.
