Individuals who are stopped must provide proof of valid immigration status, such as a valid visa, residence card or EU Registration Certificate.
Portuguese law requires every foreign national to carry documentation of their immigration status. Individuals who cannot provide proof of lawful status during a random check may be detained until their status can be ascertained, and in some cases may be fined.
The immigration checks are largely occurring in northern Portugal at this time, but they are expected to occur throughout the country in the coming days and weeks.
