During the random checks, individuals are asked to provide proof of valid immigration status. The inspections are being conducted in bus, subway and train stations, public stores, and during routine traffic stops.

The Portuguese Immigration Services and local police forces in recent days have been conducting random individual immigration checks in public locations such as bus, subway and train stations, public stores, and during routine traffic stops. Individuals who are stopped must provide proof of valid immigration status, such as a valid visa, residence card or EU Registration Certificate.

Portuguese law requires every foreign national to carry documentation of their immigration status. Individuals who cannot provide proof of lawful status during a random check may be detained until their status can be ascertained, and in some cases may be fined.

The immigration checks are largely occurring in northern Portugal at this time, but they are expected to occur throughout the country in the coming days and weeks.
