Brazil: New Procedures at Brazilian Consular Posts in U.S. Cause Delays, Particularly in Los Angeles

Brazilian consular posts in the United States are experiencing delays in visa processing due to their online visa application process. In particular, there are substantial delays for individuals submitting applications to the Consulate General in Los Angeles because of a new online appointment scheduling system.

Brazilian consular posts in the United States have implemented a new online visa application that is causing delays in visa application processing. This is particularly true for individuals residing within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General in Los Angeles, which has also introduced a new online appointment scheduling system.

At all Brazilian consular posts in the United States, visa applicants must now first complete an online application form, which is available at https://scedv.serpro.gov.br. Other than in Los Angeles, Brazil’s consular posts also accept visa applications filed by third-party visa service providers. Currently, because of the new online system and the way Brazilian posts handle applications submitted through third-party visa service providers, visa processing may be delayed up to 23 days.

While this on-line application procedure is causing processing delays at all Brazilian diplomatic posts in the United States, the most significant delays are currently being experienced at the Consulate General in Los Angeles. Upon completion of the online application form, applicants receive a reference, or “protocol,” number. In Los Angeles, applicants must now use their registration number to schedule an appointment through a separate online system, which is available at http://www.advnetworking.com/Brazil_LA/Appointment/. Applicants using this system are currently finding that the next available appointments are 60 days or more away. A reduction in this wait time is not expected in the near future.

Note that the Brazilian consular posts in Atlanta, Boston, and Houston have also introduced an online appointment system that is similar to the one used in Los Angeles. However, reports indicate that these posts are only experiencing delays of up to 23 days as discussed above and not the longer delays being experienced in Los Angeles.
