Belgium: Work Permit Requirement Extended for Bulgarian and Romanian Nationals
Bulgarian and Romanian nationals will need a work permit to take up employment in Belgium through December 31, 2013, the government has decided. However, Bulgarians and Romanians who seek to work in an occupation that is in demand may benefit from a streamlined application process.
When Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, established EU member countries could elect to maintain work restrictions for nationals of both countries for an initial period of five years. Member countries have the option to renew the restrictions for two more years if lifting them would adversely affect the domestic labor market. Belgium has elected to maintain work restrictions, with the addition of the streamlined application process for those seeking to fill in-demand occupations.
